Calligraphy Workshop: Intro to Blackletter on Saturday September 29

60.00

Hosted by POST + Patrick Barber

Saturday September 29th from 2 to 5pm

Using the building blocks of Blackletter as a starting point, we'll take a calligraphic journey through the history of letterforms and typography. Students will learn the ways of a broad-nib calligraphy pen, using it to create basic letterforms. Blackletter is a modular hand that is easily learned and used.

Students will have the opportunity to learn other foundational calligraphic alphabets if they so desire. I'll also bring a selection of my own pens and inks for students to experiment with. There will be an hour or so of instruction, followed by plenty of time to create your own pieces. All materials will be provided.

Everyone will take home worksheets, an informative handout, a high quality cartridge calligraphy pen, and cards and envelopes for showing off your new skills.

  • No experience necessary.

  • This class is open to ages 12+

  • All materials are provided.

  • Includes cards & envelopes and pens

  • Refreshments will be served.

About the instructor:

Patrick Barber is an art director, book designer, and lifelong lover of calligraphy and letterforms. His first design gigs were as a tween calligrapher creating menus and invitations. The lure of typography soon eclipsed the appeal of the broad nib in a professional context, but his love of making his own letters never died. Formerly of Portland, Oregon, and points west, Patrick now makes his home on the east side of Detroit.
